READING COMPREHENSION
Strategies to help students understand what they read
Often students can 'read' many words, but not understand what they are reading.
In this course, teachers will learn how they can teach students a variety of comprehension strategies to assist with students' understanding of what they read. Teachers have a lot of fun learning how to teach comprehension strategies such as visualizing, questioning, inferring, activating prior knowledge and determining main ideas.
These strategies are explicitly taught and in a manner that ensures students transfer this knowledge to all reading. Traditionally, many teachers unwittingly focus on testing comprehension. This course demonstrates how to name the various comprehension strategies and teachers will leave the workshop with a variety of ideas and lessons to immediately implement with their students. This workshop allows teachers to answer the question students ask: 'What do I do if I read all the words and still can't understand what I read?'
